#119: Look for and share the positive stories about Indigenous people, not just the negative ones.

Perception of Indigenous people is often rife with misperceptions. Which is why sharing the positive stories of business success, social innovation and academic achievement is extremely important. We are fortunate to live in a region that recognized the concept of positivity early on. Locally, the Regional Aboriginal Recognition Awards have been recognizing and sharing positive stories of Indigenous people for 30 years! The ceremony took place on February 10th, and those who attended were blessed to hear the achievements of each recipient and how they are contributing to a better region. Check out all the amazing recipients here.

On a National level, the Inspire Awards, previously know as the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards, has been  one of the most positive and enlightening awards ceremonies that introduces the Nations to pretty amazing Indigenous individuals. After 25 years, the Indspire Awards has honoured 350 First Nations, Inuit, and Métis individuals. The show is a nationally broadcast celebration of culture showcasing the diversity of Indigenous peoples including performances by the biggest names in Indigenous entertainment. Since 1994, the ceremonies not only brought role models into my living room, but also introduced so many impactful artists.

Provincially, we have the Esquao Awards which are regarded as one of the most prestigious events in Alberta for recognizing and celebrating the accomplishments of Aboriginal women. The Awards, started in 1996 by the Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women, have grown to be the single largest recognition event of Aboriginal women in the Canada. I'm still learning how to lift up everyone I meet, lateral violence is something that I've been subjected to and to be honest I've also passed along. For all those negative stories/perceptions that I've shared, and those who I have harmed with those words. I am truly sorry. I'll do my best to focus on the positive and share only those.
